Focus:  Overview of Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) and ACP national partnership to help small to mid-sized businesses develop business continuity plans using IBHS’ Open for Businesssm toolkit.

Background: In February, 2006, IBHS presented a partnership proposal to the ACP Board of Directors and Chapter Presidents’ meeting in St. Petersburg FL.  The proposal was in support of the findings and “Next Steps” discussed in an ACP study published in January 2006 on lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina. IBHS suggested that ACP chapters work through Chambers of Commerce, or other business associations, using its Open for Businesssm toolkit to help small businesses develop business continuity plans.  Attendees at the meeting voted to have all ACP chapters offer at least one training program for small businesses in their geographical area during 2006, using the Open for Businesssm toolkit.  (Update:  Many chapters across the country are now engaged in offering these sessions, or are in various stages of planning.)

ACP Lesson 1 - Emphasize the need for greater business continuity planning in the small and mid-sized business sector. Considering the Fortune 500 companies have the resources to hire business continuity staff or experienced consultants, small companies do not have the same luxury. ACP should organize seminars through the local chambers of commerce to help educate and guide these organizations on how to develop their own plans.

Diana McClure, IBHS, will explain the initiative, share training materials developed for ACP chapters, as well as strategies and programs developed by ACP chapters.

Presenter:

Diana McClure, VP & Director of Business Protection

Institute for Business & Home Safety

Diana McClure joined IBHS in 1997 and in recent years has been responsible for the development and implementation of the Open for Businesssm program.  She was responsible for development of an interactive, web-based small to mid-sized business continuity planning and property protection tool for IBHS member company employees, agents and policyholders entitled Open for Businesssm, and the translation of that tool into a print/CD version for the general public.  She has worked in a number of other capacities with IBHS since 1997, including development and implementation of the Showcase Program for Natural Disaster Resistance and Resilience at the community and state level and on safe growth/land use issues.

Prior to joining IBHS, she worked for Rhode Island Sea Grant at the University of Rhode Island Coastal Resources Center and was a mitigation specialist with FEMA Region I, traveling throughout the U.S. to help communities recover from natural disasters. Before focusing on natural hazards loss reduction, she served as a regional representative for the Insurance Information Institute and a consultant on civil liability of law enforcement officials and civil rights conflict management.  She has a master's degree from Boston College and a B.A. from Brown University.

The Institute for Business & Home Safety’s mission is to reduce the social and economic effects of natural disasters and other property losses by conducting research and advocating improved construction, maintenance and preparation practices.

IBHS’ members are insurers and reinsurers that conduct business in the United States or reinsure risks located in the United States. Associate membership is open to all others who support the mission.

The ACP is an Associate Member of IBHS.
